History

Teaching Peace is a not-for-profit organization that was created in 1994 by Beverly Title and Lana Leonard. The Longmont Community Justice Partnership (LCJP) was founded in 1996 to bring restorative practices to the Longmont community. In 2002 LCJP was given a Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) award in Local Government Innovations for Cooperative Service Delivery. LCJP is a community led partnership with Longmont Police Department, St. Vrain Valley School District, Longmont Municipal Probation, Clearview Educational Center, and Teaching Peace as the managing partner.

LCJP TIMELINE:
1996 (# offenders served - 1)- LCJP began 10/96- The first team of LCJP volunteers completed Real Justice training: Thom Allena, Lisa Eringen, Kathee Jones, Lana Leonard, Bea Ramos, Beverly Title, Carol Will, Sarah MacCracken


1997 (# offenders served - 53)- Received first grant from the Division of Criminal Justice- Developed the Community Group Conference model & Pre conference Script- Consultation with Mike Dooley (National Institute of Corrections) resulted in the addition of Community as an entity in CGC circles.- LCJP trains Longmont Police Department officers on RJ.


1998 (# offenders served - 69)- August - Lana Leonard receives "9 Who Care" Award for her work in restorative justice and with expelled students- September - LCJP lifts restrictions on types of cases and ages of offenders- September - LCJP begins technical assistance to five communities in Boulder County to assist them in implementing restorative justice programs.


1999 (# offenders served - 84)- Peacemaking Circle Models were first developed


2000 (# offenders served - 108)- DCJ grant sunsets- June - Fairview High School wins Peace Builder Award after LCJP technical assistance provides support for their development of the Student Conflict Hearing Board model- Summer - School Resource Officer Training in restorative justice- Fall - - LCJP develops model for Peacemaking Circles to use with victimless crimes and crimes with mutual responsibility on the part of victims and offenders


2001 (# offenders served - 163)- January - LCJP begins offering Restorative Decision-Making classes for court-ordered participants- May - Peacemaking circle training at Ginny Mackey's- September - LCJP Director receives first annual Virginia Mackey Award- October - Lana Leonard moved to Arizona- Circles of Justice video was produced- City of Longmont funding replaces DCJ funding


2002 (# offenders served - 192)- Summer - LCJP provides first Peacemaking Circle training for the Forum Academy- September - LCJP produces their manual for program - September - LCJP paper published in Contemporary Justice Review


2003 (# offenders served - 264)- Published LCJP Implementation manual- Produced LCJP Facilitator manual


2004 (# offenders served - 272)- Boulder County Training Collaboration began
